From Concept to Reality: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Mural Creation Process

Updated: Jun 18

The entire process of mural execution is a very detailed one. Mural art is a powerful form of expression that transforms blank walls into captivating masterpieces. The journey from concept to reality involves a meticulous and creative process that brings ideas to life. There are multiple steps involved along with various rounds of conversation or feedback. In this blog post, we'll take a behind-the-scenes look at the mural creation process, exploring the steps, challenges, and artistic decisions that shape a mural from its initial concept to its stunning realization. I will be taking the example of a mural project that I executed for Board Games Cafe at Coimbatore.

Step 1: Conceptualization and Vision

Brainstorming and Ideation:

  • If possible, I visit the site physically, but if that is not possible, it is recommended to get as many good quality pictures and videos as possible. This particular project was quite far for physical visit, so I had the client send me pictures of the walls. This also helps to get a good idea about the location, overall lighting and saves any confusion at later stages.

  • I begin by brainstorming ideas, considering the purpose of the mural, the intended audience, and the environment in which it will be placed.

  • Sketches, mood boards, and inspiration collages help refine the initial concept and establish a visual direction.

  • I also ask the client for any images or ideas that they have or come across. That helps to understand what exactly they are looking for.

Client Collaboration:

  • If the mural is commissioned, collaboration with the client is crucial. I work closely with clients to understand their vision, goals, and any specific elements or themes they want to incorporate.

  • This steps reduces the to-and-fro for finalizing the design.

  • For this particular project, since it was a board games cafe, I asked the client to send me the pictures of all Board games that will be available there. It helped me during the designing process. I made sure to add elements from those games to make it more relatable.

  • If the client has a budget, I like t0 make it as unique and relatable as possible. In this project, I read about all the available board games and their elements and incorporated those in the design. It also ensures a good experience for the customers.

Step 2: Design Development

Preliminary Sketches:

  • I create preliminary sketches to explore composition, layout, and key visual elements. This stage allows for experimentation and adjustments based on feedback.

  • The initial design is then shared with the client for their views or feedback. I keep the client in loop throughout the process, to save time.

  • Sometimes, this can be frustrating, but being open to discussion is important for both sides. I have attached images of the feedbacks during the designing process.

Digital Mockups:

  • The design is approved by the client. I make sure to get the design approved in written. It can be a mail or even a simple WhatsApp message.

  • In the digital realm, there are various software available to create detailed mockups, allowing clients to visualize the mural in its intended space. This stage helps refine the design and ensures alignment with the client's expectations. Not every client asks for a mockup.

  • In this image you can see all the three finalized artworks.

Step 3: Material and Surface Considerations

Material Selection:

  • Choosing the right materials, including paint types and brushes or spray equipment, is crucial. I consider factors such as the mural's location (indoor or outdoor), longevity, desired texture, etc.

Step 4: Execution:

  • There can be certain changes in design, while painting also. There can be some elements or changes requested during that time. If is is not significant, it can definitely be incorporated. If the changes are significant, it might lead to additional charges.

  • Attached are the images after the murals were painted.

At the end, it should be a win-win situation for both the parties. As an artist, I should be happy and proud of what I am delivering and the client should be satisfied with the work. Now the final pictures are going to give you a clear picture of how a mural can enhance the overall look of a space.

So, when you see a mural or any painting, remember that it is not just a painting, but a piece that has come into existence after hours of planning, discussion and a careful execution, to satisfy all the parties and please your eyes. These beautiful murals serve so much more than just a beautifying element.
